Abstract

I explore the differences in the rates individual establishments hire workers from employment versus from unemployment. I find heterogeneity in hiring behavior along this dimension and that this heterogeneity is persistent over time. I also show evidence that firms that hire more from employment seem to engage in more screening behavior when hiring workers. Finally, I introduce a model of search and matching where establishments can target the vacancies they post towards employed or unemployed workers and which captures the idea that establishments target vacancies towards employed workers as a form of screening.
