Events

  • From August 31st to September 3rd, the 2022 European Economic Science Association Conference will take place (Venue: Plesso Belmeloro) with keynote speakers being Sule Alan (European University Institute), Gabriele Camera (Chapman University), Leeat Yariv (Princeton University) e ​​Axel Ockenfels (University of Cologne). The organizers committee is composed by Maria Bigoni, Stefania Bortolotti e Marco Casari. More than 400 participants are expected.  

  • The PRIN 2017 Naghavi project "New Protectionist Policies: Political Determinants and Economic Consequences" is organizing a Workshop on “International Trade and Intellectual Property Rights” at the Rimini Campus of the University of Bologna on September 12-14, 2022. The website of the Workshop is: https://events.unibo.it/trade-ipr-rimini2022/ with keynote speakers being Paula Bustos (CEMFI), Keith Maskus (University of Colorado, Boulder), and Veronica Rappoport (London School of Economics). The local organizers are Alireza Naghavi, Eugenia Baroncelli, Stefano Bolatto, Gaetano Alfredo Minerva e Giuseppe Pignataro. Alireza Naghavi is editing a special issue in the journal International Economics (Elsevier) in correspondence to the event.

  • Starting from September 27, the seminar series organized by the European Association of Health Economics (EuHEA) will take place on-line on topics in all areas of health economics. Francesca Barigozzi and Rossella Verzulli are members of the Scientific Committee. The call for papers is open until July 31, and more information can be found at the following website https://www.euhea.eu/euhea-seminar-series-fall-2022.html

  • On October 1st at 11.00 (location Cappella Farnese) there will be a public meeting on the topic “Dammi solo un MinUTo! Una riflessione sul valore del tempo e della relazione genitore-bambino”, organized as part of the MinUTo project, in collaboration with the Municipality of Bologna - Education Sector Services 0-6. Maria Bigoni, Margherita Fort, Chiara Monfardini, Daniela Iorio and Stefania Bortolotti participated in the development of the project as DSE members.

YouTube official channel of the DSE

The DSE has launched an official YouTube channel dedicated to the dissemination of content related to the world of research and third mission.

In the Playlist "Economy around us" there is a video “Why money exists?” on the role of the monetary system for economic activity, a topic at the center of a series of international research projects that have involved Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, and Marco Casari since 2008.

  • Ganna Kotsiurubenko (Odessa National Economic University, Ukraine) is visiting the DSE from July 2022 to July 2023. Ganna Kotsiurubenko has been awarded a one year visiting position for scholar at risk financed by crowdfunding from all DSE members. Host: Maria Bigoni.

New colleagues

Giovanni Angelini, Associate Professor, SECS-P/05 Econometrics

Giovanni Angelini is an econometrician and he received his Ph.D. at the Department of Statistics 'Paolo Fortunati' of the University of Bologna. His main research interests cover econometrics, time series, financial econometrics, and quantitative sports economics with particular attention to the development of new methods for the identification of structural shocks and the evaluation of the efficiency in betting markets. He has authored many articles in international journals, such as Journal of Applied Econometrics, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, and International Journal of Forecasting

Enrico Cantoni, Senior Assistant Professor (RTD-B), SECS-P/01 Economics

Enrico Cantoni studies the causes and consequences of voter participation, with a particular focus to Italy and the US. He was born and raised in Bologna, where he completed the Laurea Triennale in Economia e Finanza (2009) and the Laurea Magistrale in Economics (LMEC, 2011). He then completed his PhD in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2017). His work has been published by outlets like The American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, The American Economic Review, The American Journal of Political Science, and The Quarterly Journal of Economics. He enjoys teaching methodological courses about basic principles of scientific communication and of the organization of empirical work. In his spare time, he enjoys riding his e-bike and spending time with his two daughters.

Annalisa Loviglio, Junior Assistant Professor (RTD-A), SECS-P/01 Economics

Annalisa is an applied microeconomist interested in Labour Economics, particularly Economics of Education. Her research focuses on human capital development and educational decisions: what are their determinants and what policies can improve students' outcomes. She has been working with administrative and survey data, using both reduced form and structural approaches. Currently, she is also contributing to the design and implementation of RCTs in Italy and Spain to study the transition between high school and college and assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving student allocation and reducing dropout.  She holds a PhD in Economics from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Barcelona School of Economics.

Alessandro Saia, Associate Professor, SECS-P/01 Economics

Alessandro Saia received his doctoral degree in Economics from the University of Bologna in 2015. He worked as an economist at the Economics Department of the OECD and as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lausanne. He has published in international journals such as Journal of International Economics and Journal of Public Economics. His research interests lie in the area of political economy.

Vincenzo Scrutinio, Junior Assistant Professor (RTD-A), SECS-P/01 Economics

Vincenzo Scrutinio is an applied microeconomists whose research interests lie in labor and public economics. His research focuses on the role of public policies and in the measurement of the impact of interventions in favour of firms and individuals. He studies how subsidies and benefits shape individual behaviour and can deliver improvement in agents’ outcomes. His work is based on the identification of causal policy parameters thanks to experimental and quasi-experimental variation and the use of large administrative datasets. His paper “The Medium-Term effect of Unemployment Benefits” was awarded the Ezio Tarantelli prize for Labour Economics in 2020.

  • Maria Elena Bontempi has been appointed as Fellow from the Society for Economic Measurement.
  • Tommaso Sonno has been appointed as deputy scientific director of PNRR Lab at SDA Bocconi, a research centre that will collect PNRR data and will provide robust impact analyses.
  • Lorenzo Masiero has been appointed as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Tourism Research Empirical Insights; and Associate Editor of Annals of Tourism Research.

  • March 24-25: Giuseppe Cavaliere was invited to participate as a speaker at the “Machine Learning Approaches Finance and Management” conference at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
  • May 31st: Giuseppe Cavaliere was invited to participate as an invited discussant in the “Econometric models of climate change” workshop, held at the University of Ferrara.
  • June 2-4: Giuseppe Cavaliere was invited to participate as a speaker at the “Vienna-Copenhagen Conference on Financial Econometrics” at the University of Copenhagen.
  • June 4th: Annalisa Loviglio participated as a speaker at the event “Education between merit and inequalities”, organized by the Pupils Association of the Carlo Alberto College for the International Festival of Economics in Turin.
  • June 6-9: Anastasios Xepapadeas was invited to participate in the SURED 2022 conference on "Sustaninable Resource Use and Economic Dynamics", with a keynote lecture entitled "Emerging infectious Diseases and the Economy: Climate Change, Natural World Preservation and Containment Policies".
  • June 23-24: Maria Bigoni was invited to participate in the event “Laboratory of experimental and behavioral economy” with a speech entitled “Conscious parenting and the socio-emotional skills and preferences of children”.
  • June 24: Chiara Monfardini was invited to participate in the “FUTURA” conference. Vision and action for gender equality ", held at the Hotel Baglioni in Bologna, with a speech entitled "A right time for everything and for everyone and everyone: family, home, work, social participation, time for oneself ".
  • July 7-9: Maria Bigoni was invited to participate in the conference “Learning, Evolution and Games” (LEG2022) as a keynote speaker, with a speech entitled “New insights for an old problem: cooperation in the dilemma of repeated prisoners”.

Events co-organized by the DSE

  •  April 8th: the workshop on "Political Economy, Populism and Voting" took place at the DSE. Giorgio Bellettini, Carlotta Berti Ceroni, Giovanni Prarolo and Antonio Schiavone organized the event.
  • May 11th and May 20th: the first and second session of the conference "The future of economic forecasting (and nowcasting)" organized by Giuseppe Cavaliere, in collaboration with the Prometeia Association, took place. Andrea Carriero, Luca Fanelli and Roberto Golinelli participated as invited speakers. Giuseppe Cavaliere participated as chair in the final panel of the event.
  • May 19-20: the “European Social Science Genomics Network (ESSGN)” conference was held at Palazzo Malvezzi in Bologna, organized by Pietro Biroli, Nicola Barban and Emilia Del Bono.
  • June 9-10: the "ThReD Conference 2022 (IWEEE)” conference on "Theoretical Research in Development Economics", funded by the DSE, and organized by Giuseppe Pignataro, was held at Palazzo Hercolani in Bologna. Link to the program.
  • June 9th: the “International research workshop on social and cooperative economy” was held at the Ivano Barberini Foundation in Bologna, organized by the DSE, in collaboration with CIRIEC International and the Ivano Barberini Foundation. Flavio Delbono, Giulio Ecchia and Marco Marini organized the event.
  • June 16-19: the 27th edition of the International Panel Data Conference (IPDC) took place at the Bertinoro University Residential Center, organized by Maria Elena Bontempi and sponsored by the DSE. Roberto Golinelli, Elisabetta Pellini, Giovanni Urga and Antonio Musolesi collaborated in the organization. The DSE also sponsored the Best IPDC paper award assigned to Bossoma Doriane N'Doua (Université de Bordeaux, France), for her paper entitled “The Impact of Theoretical Barriers to Trade and Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures on Trade in the Forest-Wood-Paper Sector”.
  • June 27: the workshop on "Green Bonds and Environmental Finance" was held at the Rimini campus, organized by Elettra Agliardi, in collaboration with the International Center of Economic Analysis (ICEA) and the support of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE).
  • 28 June-1 July: the 27th conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) took place at the Rimini Palacongressi, organized by the DSE in collaboration with EAERE. Alessandro Tavoni (chair of the local organizing committee), Maria Arvaniti, Emanuele Campiglio, Marco Casari, Niko Jaakkola, Luca Lambertini, Anna Montini, Esther Marie Shears and Anastasios Xepapadeas participated in the organization.
